Luisi

I grew up in Short Hills, New Jeresey. The name Luisi comes from my paternal grandfather. He was an Italian immigrant who arrived here in the early 1890s, whose name was changed to Lewis upon arrival. He graduated from Cooper Union with a degree in engineering and architecture. He was a superb draftsman. He was my earliest influence to the beauty of drawing which lead me to a fascination with human anatomy and comparative anatomy. After high school, I attended The Art Students League in NYC on Merit Scholarship for years. There, I honed by skills studying Anatomical Anatomy and Western European Drawing under the world-renowned artist Robert Beverly Hale and Portrait Painting with another highly recognized artist, David A. Laffel. From there I pursued my own style of painting which has lead me to the style in which I now paint.I attribute my passion for art to all my instructors, but most especially, to my grandparents and my Italian heritage which is why I paint under the name Luisi.

Inspiration

I made a point of familiarizing myself with all painters over the span of history. I used what I learned, particularly from the chiaroscuro and impressionist painters, to find a visual vocabulary of my own. The chiaroscuro painters include Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Vermeer, and Goya, and the rich pallet of the impressionist that include Monet, Manet, Van Gogh, Degas, and Pissarro just to name a few. The influence of painting with gravel-like texture came from Chardin.

Techniques

I developed a very unique style of painting. I incorporate thick impasto paint with thin paint, rich brilliant color alongside dirty murky muted tones, and always take advantage of using complementary colors in close proximity to one another. Our brushes are like a masons trowel. The brushwork is at least 50% of the painting and should be used sparingly. Each stroke needs to have thought behind it. A stroke is a statement! say it and leave it. I control the movement in my work with light, repetition of color, knowing where to hold an edge and where to lose an edge. The illusion of form is controlled by its edges.

Past To Present

My artwork hangs in many private collections in the US and abroad. My goal is to bring new exciting work to past and future collectors enriching their current collection or for new art enthusiasts that want quality paintings to enrich the walls of their homes.
